Statement of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Myanmar (CBCM)

  1. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Myanmar (CBCM) is deeply saddened by the current situation of the country. The CBCM expresses its concern about spiraling risks to the lives and security of innocent peoples and internally displaced persons especially, children, women, the elderly, and the sick in the afflicted areas regardless of races and faiths. Thousands are on the move, millions are starving.
  2. The CBCM is very much grateful to all the priests, religious, catechists who accompany the faithful in their flight from dangers of life to provide pastoral accompaniment and sacramental support. The CBCM encourages and asks all the priests, religious, and catechists to continue their mission of love and sacrifice for the people disrespect of the faiths, races, and places. We are inspired by the fellowship of all our Myanmar people, who compassionately welcomed the fleeing people, housed them, and fed them. This nation will be healed by such gestures.
  3. The CBCM will continue seeking the fellowship of the universal Church and donor community to seek support to all our Myanmar people, without any discrimination.
  4. As the CBCM stands for justice, peace, reconciliation, it strongly demands all concerned to facilitate humanitarian access to suffering and internally displaced peoples in order to provide them the basic Humanitarian assistance. Human dignity and the right to life can never be compromised. We strongly demand respect for life, respect for the sanctity of sanctuary in places of worship, hospitals, and schools. All those who reach out to help the people must be protected.
  5. As a faith-based organization, the CBCM strongly believes that “Everything is possible with God”. We strongly encourage all our Catholic dioceses to furthering peace in our country through all efforts, especially through our intense prayers. Through our pastoral accompaniment of our people, we will bring solace in their needs. Our service will reach out to every person in this country without any regard for race or religion.
